European Economic Area (EEA) and Norway Grants represent the contribution of Iceland, the Principality of Liechtenstein and the Kingdom of Norway to the alleviation of economic and social disparities in the European Economic Area and to the strengthening of bilateral relations with the 15 beneficiary countries in Eastern and Southern Europe and the Baltic States.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

These financing mechanisms are established on the basis of the Agreement on the European Economic Area, which brings together the EU Member States and Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway as equal partners in the internal market.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

The three countries contributed EUR 3,3 billion between 1994 and 2014 and EUR 2,8 billion for 2014-2021 funding timeframe. EEA Grants are financed by al three donors, while Norwegian Grants are financed exclusively by Norway and are available in the 13 countries that joined the EU after 2003.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

The funds are distributed on funding programmes in the specific priority sectors and in the areas, objectives and expected results established with each Beneficiary State.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

EEA and Norway Grants in Romania<\/strong><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Cooperation between Romania and the countries of the European Economic Area (EEA) began following the accession to the European Union on 01 January 2007, and Romania became a Contracting Party to the EEA Agreement on 25 July 2007.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Thus, Romania benefited from an allocation of EUR 906 million, for three funding periods:<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

2007-2009: 98,5 million euro, through which 69 projects were funded in areas such as environmental protection, health, cultural heritage and an absorption rate of 88\u00a0%.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

2009-2014: 305,95 million euro, through which 830 projects were funded in 22 funding programmes concluded in December 2017.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

2014-2021: 502 million euro, allocated to 12 funding programmes (ongoing).<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Under the Memorandum of Understanding signed on 13 October 2016 between the Government of Romania and the donor states, projects will be financed from 2018 to 2024 under the 12 established funding programmes in the areas of:<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n
